Director of Middle School Academics
Job Description: CitySquash seeks a full-time Director of Middle School Academics starting June 2010. The Academic Director oversees the academic progress of CitySquash's 30 middle school students, working closely with the students, their parents and their teachers. The Academic Director leads two weekday homework help sessions and three weekly book club classes, and organizes individual tutoring sessions for our students with volunteers. The Academic Director's responsibilities include teaching vocabulary, writing, standardized test prep, and organizing weekend community service and culture outings. S/he will also have the opportunity to assist with CitySquash's high school placement program.
Program Description: CitySquash is an after school youth enrichment program based in the Bronx at Fordham University. The mission of the program is to help at-risk youth fulfill their potential as students, athletes and people. CitySquash is entering its eighth year of operation and serves over 100 elementary, middle and high school students. Currently, CitySquash's middle school students have an academic average of 85%. CitySquash has placed 29 students, representing more than fifty percent of our middle school graduates, into private high schools, including St. Paul's, St. George's, Williston Northampton, Canterbury, Salisbury, Millbrook, Taft, Loomis Chaffee, Hill, Lasalle, Mercersburg, Blair, and St. Pius V. CitySquash has been profiled on the Today Show and in the New York Times, Newsweek, and the Daily News.
School Year Schedule (Sept - mid-June): During the school year, the work day typically begins at 10am and ends around 7pm Monday through Friday. The Academic Director also works half-days every other Saturday, chaperoning at squash tournaments, practices, community service and culture outings. On weeks when there is weekend work, the Academic Director works a half-day on Fridays. The Academic Director also chaperones up to five overnight (mostly weekend) team trips during the year.
Summer Schedule (mid-June - mid-Aug): During the summer the work day begins at 9am and ends at 5pm. There is no weekend work when school is not in session from mid-June through August.
Vacation: The position includes 6 weeks of vacation annually (1 in Dec, 1 in Feb, 1 in April and 3 in Aug). Some but not all national holidays are off.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a bachelor's degree. Experience teaching and/or working with children, especially at-risk youth, for at least one year after college is highly preferable. Knowledge of Spanish is required. Candidates must be comfortable driving a 15-passenger van. Minimum 2-year commitment required.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Range: $38,000-$42,000. Full health coverage included. No dental.
